Python logoThe new version of PyS60, Python for Symbian S60, is out and it includes support for the latest, touch-enabled S60 5th Edition, ensuring apps can run on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and the upcoming Nokia N97! Just like its predecessor, version 1.9.1 is based on the new Python 2.5.1 core, bringing more opportunities for mobile Python developers.

There’s a catch, however. PyS60 1.9.1 is still not a final product, but if you’re a developer you’re invited to give it a try and send your bug-fixing suggestions and other feedback to make the final version (2.0) as reliable as possible.

Many of the known bugs are fixed with this update and the overall system is improved and optimized. For one thing, the new version prides itself with a better interpreter startup and sis installation time — something that will be further improved in future versions…

You can read the full change log from this article on Symbian-Freak. There, you will also find out which bugs are fixed and what exactly is included in this release. Moreover, there’s a list of targets for the final 2.0 version of PyS60.

As always, we’re hoping the updated Python will entice developers to make more apps for Symbian S60!

Well, PyS60 1.9.1 still doesn’t extend touch functionality. It merely runs on the S60 5th Edition devices like the pre-releases. I am not sure about the ported change in Sensor module.
