While meeting up with a fellow BlackBerry blogger at MWC, we got to talking about Cortado’s SMS2Text announcement, and he gave me a heads-up on another great free app they had released called Save The Weekend. In short, Save The Weekend clocks your BlackBerry in and out, limiting your e-mailing timeframe so you’re not constantly checking your phone on weekends or evenings. Wait, an app that limits your BlackBerry’s e-mail output? Madness! Believe it or not, some forward-thinking employers are trying to stem burnout by having blackout periods when their workers won’t be bothered by business. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, as they say. A premium version is also available which can keep your Fridays free and take out the “Sent from my BlackBerry” footer from outgoing messages, but really, the bulk of the functionality is available in the free version. For any spouses who find themselves glaring at distracted significant others during dinner, Save The Weekend might be a fair imposition to make.

Simon Sage’s education largely surrounded writing, technology and online community, leading him to begin his blogging career at www.BlackBerryCool.com and to quickly discover a vibrant and active community surrounding BlackBerry and mobile technology. In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer.
