While the developed world waits for standardized adoption of wireless power/wireless charging technologies in the mobile space, more rural areas like much of Africa, are struggling to deal with unreliable or nonexistent power infrastructures. Sure, we may have the luxury to whine about having to deal with a multitude of cables and wires to charge our cellphones and whatnot, but it’s the lowest common denominator that should really be given our attention.

And that’s just what Dr. Cedrick Ngalande is doing. He’s invented a new power generation device that will create power through the simple act of walking around. The idea is to drag a a rolling dynamo somwhat awkardly behind you as you walk, generating up to 2 watts of power for whatever mobile device you need to charge.

Dr. Ngalande claims that normal walking can generate “more than 2 watts which is more than enough for running cell phones or radios. I envision that people will attach this to themselves and walk with it – or even attach it to an ox-cart, a skating board, bike, etc.”
