EVE Online may get a dedicated iPhone appDesigners of the popular space-based MMO, EVE Online, are thinking to go beyond the PC, to expand to other platforms such as consoles and mobile phones. We at IntoMobile.com don’t care much about consoles, hence it’s the second part we’ll discuss here.

In a recent interview to MTV Multiplayer, EVE Online’s lead designer said: “What we’re more interested in is augmenting EVE’s gameplay in the handheld space, like iPhone or Smartphone [applications] that let you check your skills or that sort of thing.”

Hear that? An iPhone app is in the queue, or at least that’s the way I read this. Now, this doesn’t mean the full blown desktop experience will be available on the iPhone. Rather I guess initially users will be able to check their stats, trade, and/or chat with other users to keeping up with events. That by itself is a good starting point, don’t you think?

I played EVE for a bit! The nice thing about EVE is that they open up their APIs more than most MMOs (World of Warcraft lets you screw with the user interface, but that’s about it). One guy already made a BlackBerry app that let you check on trades and skill training. It’s more informative than proactive, though – if they could allow you to do your buying and selling by mobile, as well as switch skill training, that would be pretty sweet.

    Here’s the BB app: http://vlad.off.net/eve/EveBerry/

check out capsuleer.evesuite.com – it’s pretty much exactly what the guy describes
you can check the skill queue, get info about skills to train
their plans for the app sound very impressive too – i’m not sure there is much that CCP could do in an “official” app that wouldn’t already be in Capsuleer – unless they allow us to interact with the game – change our skill queues and execute trades

Being able to update training would be a big seller
