During a one-day campaign, the New York City Police Department handed out a total of 9,016 tickets to motorists who were using their mobile phones without a handset while driving. The fine is $120, meaning that the city’s budget was $1,081,920 (yap, that’s more than one million bucks) stronger for that day.
For the record, during last year the NYPD issued 195,579 summonses in the city to drivers using a mobile phone while driving.
The funny thing is that a local journalist who covered the event for the NY Daily News was himself fined after being caught using his cellphone while driving to cover the story.
Moral of the article: buy a headset!
