YouTube releases native Symbian S60 client

YouTube has released a native application for Symbian S60 platform. Optimized for QVGA screens (the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is not fully supported, unfortunately), the dedicated app provides users with an easy way to browse and search for videos, and of course enjoy watching them while on the go.

The interface is very YouTube-like and you can even access top rated, most viewed and most recent videos — just like you would do on the web version. Once you select the clip, it will start playing in a landscape mode in full screen, except in the case if it’s a widescreen video, which will be shown in a “letter-box” format. Pressing any button shows standard YouTube controls, allowing you to change the volume, play/pause, or jump forward/backward through the video — it’s that easy!

On the downside we’ve already mentioned the client is not fully compatible with the Tube. Moreover, you can’t save videos for later viewing which is also a big no-no in my book. Hopefully, YouTube will address the two issues mentioned and we’ll have an updated client released in the near future.

In the meantime, if you want to try out YouTube on your S60 smartphone, hop over to m.youtube.com on your mobile web browser, follow instructions on the page and… well, you know what to do next. ;)
