The preeminent voice-over-IP application, Skype, should be finding its way to the iPhone at CTIA Wireless coming up this week, and a BlackBerry version is due to drop in May, presumably for the Wireless Enterprise Symposium.Third-party solutions for both platforms have existed for awhile (Nimbuzz updated recently for iPhone, IM+ has been around on BlackBerry for ages), but there’s nothing quite like native support. We had heard hints that the iPhone would be getting a Skype app, but the BlackBerry support is a new and welcome surprise. We’ll be sure to give Skype on iPhone a go at CTIA Wireless tomorrow, but for a closer look now, check out CNET’s sneak peek.

Meanwhile, those with a Windows Mobile handset are laughing all the way, with beta 3.0 launching recently with SMS and file transfer capabilities. The above video gives you the full run-down.

In exploring RIM’s platform, he has learned what enterprises are looking for in mobility as well as what makes the innocuous BlackBerry so appealing to them. Recently Simon’s been covering RIM’s gradual move into an already-crowded consumer market, and the impact of burgeoning challengers, such as the iPhone, as well as long-time leaders, like Nokia, on BlackBerry’s advancement. With plenty of content under his belt, Simon will be branching off a bit to see what other smartphone manufacturers are working on while still using BlackBerry as a barometer.
