starhub-logoFeaturing a global look at mobile broadband today, we journey to Singapore for some news about HSPA+…..

StarHub, in partnership with Huawei have announced the launch of StarHub’s HSPA+ network in Singapore.

This announcement makes StarHub the first operator in Asia-Pacific to have a mobile broadband network capable of speeds of up to 21Mbps. StarHub’s customers will be among the first in the world to experience the fastest mobile broadband speed and superior services than anytime previously through its HSPA+ network and devices provided by Huawei. HSPA+ increases StarHub’s mobile broadband network capacity to support speeds of up to 21Mbps, from 14.4Mbps previously.

Those are some impressive numbers, that’s for sure! If we factor in real-world conditions, could we assume perhaps that we might get a jump from 7-10Mbps, up to something like 15Mbps or more? Wow. That’s basically 8x my likely home ADSL connection in the UK!

Slightly more seriously though, we are seeing HSPA+ now as a real contender for both eclipsing the need for WiFi to a great degree, but also challenging the likes of WiMax and LTE – remember, it’s not just about top speeds, but also about consistency of coverage – I know that I’d prefer a service running at 15-20Mbps everywhere, rather than getting 40Mbps+, but only in one location!

It’ll be interesting to see how Operators invest in 3.5 and 3.75G technologies, as they consider their transition to the likes of 4G and beyond – watch this space – it’s sure to be fast moving!
