Symbian Foundation’s David Wood has a new post on Symbian blog. In his latest article, he discusses the release plans for the platform:
The source code for the first release of the platform, Symbian^2, is already available on the Mercurial repositories on the Symbian developer website. This version will reach Functionality Completed stage in week 19 2009, and is expected to be Hardened by week 51 this year.
Among the key features of this release are support for multiple form factors, resolutions and input methods; as well as customizable home screen supporting embedded widgets and other personal content.
Symbian^3 will be part of a complete ecosystem offering of all the software needed to quickly create a wide range of smartphones. It is expected to reach Functionality Completed stage in week 04 2010, and to be Hardened by week 26 of the same year.
Key features of this release will include integrated support for seamless composition of hardware-accelerated content into UI elements, and integrated high performance communications architecture.
As for Symbian^4, planning for this release is at an early stage and it will follow Symbian^3 by around six months. Technologies included with this release will include Qt along with the new “Orbit” extension library, a new “Direct UI” interaction and navigation logic, the application suite re-factored and re-written to take advantage of Qt APIs, Orbit widgets, and Direct UI…
