Have you ever watched the Scripps National Spelling Bee on TV, and thought to yourself, ‘I can do that!’. Well now, thanks to the developers at EpicTilt, you can on any iPhone or iPod Touch. They’ve released ESPN Spelling Bee to challenge your spelling prowess.

The game is simple. Turn up the volume and listen to your first word as read by ESPN’s Trey Wingo. You can also get the word’s origin, definition, part of speech, and in a sentence, just like in a real spelling be. Once you’re confident, use the keyboard to punch out the word… But you only have 60 seconds (and 3 ‘lives’) to do so!

Perhaps the coolest feature of the game is the live leaderboard. This feature takes scores from players all around the globe and updates in real time.

Thankfully, this one also has a ‘Lite’ edition, which will let you ‘try before you buy’. ESPN Spelling Bee Lite (iTunes link) includes only 10 words, but the global leaderboard and all other features are present. It’s a good way to see if you like the game before you lay down the big bucks. If you like it, the full version will run you $4.99 (iTunes link).

The beauty of this game is the fact that you can challenge and spell from the comfort of your own home… or wherever you happen to be. No need to get in front of a large audience, only to let the pressure get to you (see the video below).

Don’t worry, the kid recovers and doesn’t miss a beat. He gets right up and spells the word successfully. What a trooper.

Important Note: Did you know we’re giving away 3 iPhone 3G S devices? We sure are! If you’d like to play games like the ESPN Spelling Bee on a brand-new 3G S, head on over to our iPhone 3G S Launch Day Giveaway Bonanza post for all the details. It’s free and easy to enter. Do it now! :)
