It’s the battle for the iPhone 3GS jailbreak! With iPhone hacker Geohot’s purplera1n iPhone 3GS jailbreak utility already live and in the wild, the iPhone Dev Team has decided to go ahead and release their redsn0w iPhone 3GS jailbreak solution early. The Team had initially intended to wait until Apple pushed out the iPhone 3.1 OS update, but Geohot’s purplera1n release bumped up their launch window to, well, now.

redsn0w replaces the QuickPWN jailbreak software that’s been something of a staple among iPhone hackers/jailbreakers over the past couple years. More importantly, redsn0w will preserve the iPhone 3.0 baseband for future iPhone OS releases. That’s going to be important for people that want to unlock their iPhone 3GS or iPhone 3G in the future. Once jailbroken, you can software unlock your iPhone 3GS using ultrasn0w.

Find redsn0w here. You can then use ultrasn0w to unlock your iPhone 3GS. Find ultrasn0w here.
