Japan’s fourth largest operator, eMobile, announced that they are the first carrier to upgrade the network to HSPA+, bringing download speeds to 21Mbps. Of course a compatible handset or a USB modem is required to take advantage of those speeds, but that shouldn’t be the problem — I guess they added some new devices to its offering following the upgrade.
Anyway, eMobile holds about 15% of the market, which is not bad considering its competitors include NTT DoCoMo, SoftBank Mobile and KDDI. After HSPA+ comes LTE, and the carrier plans to start constructing the new network in September 2010…
