Mobile applications tend to be shoehorned into the smartphone category, since they have the horsepower of a mini-computer to handle a variety of demands, but that doesn’t mean folks with feature phones want to sit idly by while their high-rolling buddies get all the fun. In fact, a study by Samsung has shown that 42% of Europeans packing a lower-end phone would pay for apps if there was a store, and 54% would pay up to 5 Euros per application. 34% of respondents wanted to get navigation apps, 12% photography apps, 11% work-related, and 9% shopping. In a bizarre twist of demographics, 70% of women would play games, as opposed to 57% of men. Huh!
Those are some pretty interesting numbers overall, and just goes to show that there’s a big market for apps further down the mobile phone food chain. Apps on feature phones might not be as flashy, but smartphones remain a minority in mobility overall – application developers would be wise to keep that in mind when mulling over which platform they’re planning to tackle next.
