Skype has just launched a beta application for Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and Feature Pack 2 devices. The hefty 4.2 MB installation file takes up 6 MB of your phone’s internal memory, making it one of the largest Symbian application I’ve come across, and the number of clicks required to install the application, easily over 10, is absolutely ridiculous. You’ve been warned. That being said, once installed you get all the awesome features of Skype on your desktop such as: free Skype-to-Skype calling, call mobile and landline phones using Skype credit, receive phone calls with your Skype number, instant messaging, group chat, and file sharing. The Skype beta works over 3G and WiFi too so you could effectively get free minutes if both you and the person you’re trying to contact has this application installed. Skype emphasizes that this is beta, and note that it will crash from time to time. I’ve successfully manage to crash the application twice on my Nokia E71 while simply scrolling down my phone book which has less than 30 contacts. They expect the final version of this application to hit the market in early 2010.

4.2 mb? wow… i think I’ll stick to Fring for now. Skype should try to get Video working too.

  • Stefan Constantinescu

The amount of people who would want to use video calling is ultra low. They should focus on improving stability.

  • dextroz

Jesus – you post a fucking article and totally drop the ball on mentioning if it support video calls. No wonder the whole symbian market is so screwed up – talk about a lack of independent critical reporting.

  • dextroz

If I were you, I’d watch my ass real tight – cause that statement’s coming right around for a square bite.

You sound like Bill Gates making a statement about 640KiB being enough memory for everything.

  • Stefan Constantinescu

    Love you too.

  • dextroz

Good strategy – please be more analytical in your posts with some independentinput as opposed to just providing news.

    Also, sorry for being rude.

If you want video calling Fring now supports video calling to skype on S60
