Google bringing Nexus One to Verizon in Spring 2010

By: , IntoMobile

nexus-one-verizon-google-pageThe Nexus One is live! But, there’s a catch. Google’s own-branded Android “superphone” (a term that Google termed to describe their Nexus One) is so far only compatible with GSM networks like AT&T and T-Mobile USA. If you’re looking for 3D data speeds, you’re only bet is T-Mobile – the Nexus One will only do EDGE data on AT&T’s network. But fret not, Verizon subscriber, your day will soon come. Google confirmed today that the Nexus One will be available from Verizon (as well as Vodafone) in the Spring of 2010.

For the being, however, you’ll have to make due with the Verizon Motorola Droid. Google’s Nexus One online store states that the Nexus One is “coming soon” to Verizon, and offers a link to the Motorola Droid website for those of you who just can’t stand to wait a few months for Google’s first superphone to go live your carrier of choice.

So, what are you going to do? Wait for the Nexus One to launch on Verizon? Grab a Nexus One for T-Mobile or AT&T? Just grab a Motorola Droid and be done with it? Let us know in the comments below!

Google is stupid for giving Verizon the first shot at a CDMA Nexus One. Sprint is one of the founding members of the Open Handset Alliance. Verizon still isn’t one of the members. Why the hell do they get all the shots? Cus they got deep pockets? Oh well. Googles true colors came out when they were insisting that they wouldn’t compete with the vendors using their OS by launching their own phone. Then they did. Now they don’t even give the CDMA phone to one of their founding members.

Pretty soon i’ll trade in my G1 for a HD2 and then i’ll feel better for not supporting back stabbers.

  • Jim

I am eligible for an up grade with Verizon on Jan. 15, I was going to get the Droid but I will be waiting till spring now to get the Nexus One. It’s going to be a long winter.

  • Greg

Does anyone know if the nexus one will be a global phone on verizon?

  • vzwjj

Didnt you remember when Google and Verizon signed an agreement a couple months ago and VZW was first to get android 2.0 (DROID)? Sprint and google have no partnerships, alliances work for each other no against.

  • Marc

As long as I can get the Nexus One on my current family plan with a contract extension, I will wait and do that. I was in the store to buy a Moto Droid back in November, but then decided to wait for something without the unnecessary physical keyboard, and now that the Nexus One is officially coming to Verizon I am glad I waited. I have seen reports (uncomfirmed) on some sites that indicate I would need to sign up for a new account to get the Nexus One at the subsidized price on Verizon, rather than being able to keep my family plan and just replace my current phone (and extend my contract of course). If that is the case, it might be a dealbreaker for me that would push me back to the Moto Droid.

  • Stephen

The Nexus One would have to have both CDMA and GSM to be considered a world phone. I have been watching this device in the press for months and this possibility has never come up.

  • Mike

Finally Verizon is getting a decent phone. I’ve had to stick with verizon because other carriers have lousy coverage in my area. I’m glad I didn’t jump on the other droid phones right away. They really kept the lid on this one for a while. Wasn’t expecting it, but I hope it lives up to it’s expectations.

  • Madeline

I am also eligible for a “new every two” upgrade with Verizon and am leaning towards waiting for the Google Droid…

  • Kane

Verizon gets all the shots because they have the best service. A phone is only as good as the service its using and companies dont want people to think the phone sucks because they are roaming as soon as the street lights end.

  • Joe

Why in the world didn’t Google come out with the Verizon version first? They’re the biggest network, with (apparently) the best service, and AT&T already has the iPhone. Why is it CDMA networks always have to wait to get the good phones? I understand the exclusive licensing agreement between AT&T and Apple, but Google really should have let Verizon and Sprint have this phone first. I’m ready to buy one right now, if this thing proves to be superior to my Blackberry Tour, but I may not, because obviously Google doesn’t seem to be worried about getting the largest network using its phone right away.

  • Tracey

I have an iPhone, but I HATE AT&T’s service, which is terrible in the DC metro area. Before Google came out with the Nexus One, I was going to cancel my service, this month, and get the Motorola Droid. However, now that the Nexus One is out, I am going to wait until the Spring and get the Nexus One with Verizon!!

  • joyce

I don’t understand why Google would make this phone work with a carrier so few people really use? I only know one person who uses TMobile. Are they trying to do for TMobile what Iphone did for AT&T? I REALLY don’t understand what Verizon was thinking with the DROID — it is a man’s phone — made for a man, marketed to a man. Did they intend to completely neglect women or was the cheap Eris supposed to humor women. It really disturbs me that Verizon did this. It seems to me that part of the success of the iphone is its appeal to both sexes and all ages. Did Google use geeks to design the business plan and did Verizon use geeks to design its marketing plan. That is certainly how it looks at this stage of the game. Dumb.

  • Robert

You ask, why would Google “make this phone work with a carrier so few people really use?” Bear in mind they are also selling an unlocked version of this GSM phone. That means it works, right now, on masny carriers around the world. That would not be true if it was a CDMA phone. Of course, that begs the question of why it doesn’t support both GSM and CDMA. I think the answer may be that Verizon would try to stop Google from selling an unlocked version of such a phone. We’ll know for sure when the Nexus is released for Verizon.

  • 1bad540i

….uhhmmmm.. verizon joined the “open handset alliance” on and or about december 4, 2007….

just to clear up any misinformation……

at&t had previous signed contracts with iphone folks prohibiting behavior that would have been required if at&t joined the “open handset alliance.”

just to clear up any earlier misinformation……

  • Margos

I will wait for Nexus one on Verizon. They have the best service Frends that have iphones cannot stand the service with AT&T. What good is a great phone if the service sucks?

  • Shak

The Eris is definitely NOT a cheap phone.. I got it for my WFG period to play with an android phone.. it’s an excellent device, and when Google pushes the 2.0 OS out to it, it will probably be BETTER than the Moto Droid.. besides the screen being smaller (the only real drawback, along with no camera-flash).. the Eris has many things OVER the moto device- it’s much more stylish, the browser lets you pinch zoom, like Safari on the iPhone, it has the trackball, PLUS the HTC Sense UI.. which brings INSTANT additional customization out of the box.. that phone’s got SWAG!

  • Eric

I am also a Verizon subscriber and was going to get the Droid but I will now wait until the Nexus One comes out & get that instead.

  • Leo

My 2 year contract with Verizon is over at the end of March. I was looking for cheaper plans and found PagePlus that you can use any CDMA phone with them and they still use the Verizon network. I have a LG DARE that I was going to port that over but now I’m thinking of getting the Nexus One instead. PagePlus has a prepaid plan called “Talk n Text 1200″ for $29.95 for 30 days of service that includes 1,200 voice minutes, 1,200 text or picture messages, and 50 megabytes of data. That’s a lot cheaper then what I’m paying right now for just 450 minutes of calls and nothing else.

  • Phoner

I just came from the AT&T store in the Exton, PA mall where the employees insist that AT&T will not support Nexus One. Did I read the above story incorrectly? Are the AT&T employees right or wrong?

  • JOHN

Phoner, They are wrong. It works with AT&T. It will though not work on ATT&T 3G, only T-Mobile.

  • Josh

The Nexus will work with AT&T but will not have 3G data. T-Mobile and AT&T use a different frequency for their 3G networks.

  • Fast Eddie

I have been researching for several months my next phone. Iphone may currently be the best world phone but ATT sucks in North America.

Blackberry is so slow, even though it is the best email phone today. Droid looked to the the answer as it does Outlook Exchange. Then N1 was released.

Nexus One looks to be worth waiting for, given that it has the fastest processor on the market and will handle upgrades the best.Android platforms will work with Outlook Exchange.

The apps will outnumber Apple in 18 months. Watch Out Apple.

  • apbear

I have had verizon for years, best service out there, and I was going to buy a moto droid, but it’s too bulky and looks horrendous. Eris is a sweet looking phone, but then I feasted my eyes on the n1.. and I’ll wait for that.. fastest processor out there.. worth the wait.. and it has a bigger screen..

  • Phoenix

Until this phone is available on Verizon it’s even more pointless than the iPhone on AT&T. Great phone on a crappy network. T-Mobile??? What was Google thinking????

  • selena005

I was looking at upgrading to a Droid with Verizon. I now will wait for the Nexus One. I have been with Verizon for about 3 years and I can not complain about the service. I agree with everyone that says “what good is a great phone with service that sucks?”

  • VZW 4 EVER

The only good thing that may come from Verizon Wireless launching this after T-Mobile is that it will give them the chance to request a few tweaks to the device to maximize it’s potential. After seeing the reviews for the T-Mobile version, VZW would be smart to request a few changes for their customers….like they usually do. Have you seen the reviews for the Palm Pre and Pixi “Plus” coming to Verizon soon? Verizon knows what they’re doing and I can barely wait until it launches on their network. The best 3G network and the best phone by Google = one happy customer! ( and to add to VZW’s current Google or “DROID” line up – the Eris is a much more appealing device. It does however lack a large enough display and no flash on the camera and the virtual keyboard is accurate and responds quickly. The software update will be available very soon for HTC’s Eris, but my upgrade day will no doubt be the day Verizon Wireless launches the Nexus One)

  • VZW 4 EVER

…. the current DROID comparison was, of course, to the Moto DROID….

  • Jason Stitt

Doesn’t anyone see the benefit of having this out on crappy networks first? What happened when AT&T released the first series of Iphones? They released one not to long after that that had all the kinks worked out. As a consumer, I have no problem waiting 2 or 3 months if I know there will already be some things worked out in it to make it a better device for me. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple take the approach that Google has in marketing it’s own phone that will work on many networks after their exclusivity with AT&T is up (most people are estimating this year). If anyone watched the press conference for the Nexus One when it was released one thing they talked about was how by taking less work from the carriers themselves by individually marketing the phone, especially online rather than in stores, this will cut down costs and eventually make plans cheaper. Can’t wait for this to happen. Likewise, if Apple follows this model I believe the price of the phones will go down as well. I recently read a report that the hardware for the Nexus one is estimated at $175… but they are retailing it at over $500. Another thing to strike people’s interests is that during the press conference a representative from Qualcomm talked about their work on presently developing a chip designed for both CDMA and GSM networks. In conclusion I just want to say I believe we are on the brink of a turning point in the cellular industry, with better phones and cheaper prices just around the corner… we will see dramastic changes withing the next 5 years in terms of what we see and get from companies like AT&T, Verizon, Google, and Apple. An example would be Verizon’s mobile hotspot that they recently released, which is in essence a mobile wireless router which works with your computer off of their 3g network. I personally can’t wait to see the things to come in the next coming years, and especially for the cheaper prices =)

  • Jason Stitt

I also wanted to say that GSM networks are actually the world norm when it comes to cellular technology. It was probably smart for Google to release this phone as a GSM version first because of the larger market/better profits. Also, eventhough ATT service is not to good in the US they are at the top with Vodaphone (Verizon’s parent company) as far as best company’s worldwide… just some information…

  • Nick

I was thinking about getting a Droid Eris, but I’m definitely going to get the Nexus One instead. Yay Verizon is FINALLY getting cool phones.

  • CT

What do you mean a “man’s phone”? No where in any marketing material does it hint at any masculinity or “manly” focus. Additionally, the “cheap” Eris is a great phone with some features I feel that are superior to the Moto Droid.
Yes, I too can upgrade now and will be waiting for the Nexus One to come available on Verizon. I was just getting ready to go with the Eris, which I love (much better than the Moto Droid), but will hold out for that smoking processor. This is a big leap for me as I’ve been a devoted Blackberry user for several years. I have a World Edition, Pink Curve, Storm, and Tour – if anyone is interested after I get my Nexus One ;0

This is a big leap for me as I’ve been a devoted Blackberry user for several years. I have a World Edition, Pink Curve, Storm, and Tour – if anyone is interested after I get my Nexus One – I work in tech support for Verizon Wireless and can attest to our commitment to the network – the phone is only as good as the network – might as well use an iPhone as a doorstop, hocky puck, boat anchor, coaster, child disciplinary device, chocks to keep your trailer from rolling away, flashlight, shim for installing doors & windows, shape is great for skipping across water, straight-edge for drawing straight lines, vibrating device (use your imagination), toilet tank water saver, dog toy, gift for your most hated San Francisco lawyer – watch him turn red, blue, then purple as he drops every call throughout the Bay area and then as he travels down to San Diego he can drop every call as the GSM network TRIES to handoff the call from one tower to another ;0

  • Z!

    Hi,

I am going to wait for the Nexus one on Verizon as well. I hate AT&T and that has been the only thing keeping me from the Iphone. Nexus will step into the arena on turn the table I think. I just hope the Email features are as good as blackberry.

  • Joe

I’m glad you posted that. I was disappointed it didn’t come to Verizon first, but waiting to get it right is the best move. Now I feel sheepish for my impatience :)

  • B

Relax dude. It’s just a phone

  • Andrew Calvache

    To selena005,
I too was going to get the Droid but late December I ran into a page describing the Nexus One so now I am waiting for the release come Spring! I just hope there will be a plan where the phone is cheaper than it’s cost from Google, like how AT&T customers have to do now.

  • John

I just left the Verizon store. My new every two was going to get me a Droid. One of the sales reps told me to wait a few months for the N1. There was a customer in the store with a T-Mobile N1. He let me use it. It is awesome. I am definitely waiting.

He was there because he is switching his family over to Verizon due to T-Mobile’s lack of service.

Google and Verizon, please get the N1 out for the Verizon users! You will kill AT&T. With a comparable phone, no one will suffer through AT&T’s dismal service.

  • David Wright

Does anyone know if/how Verizon will cripple the Nexxus One? Those details will be the deal maker/breaker for whether I go with Nexxus One on Verizon.

  • rick

I am a verizon customer was going to get the droid but I will hold out for the N1!!!!!!!!!

  • Spencer Hardy

I had the N1 for 12 days and it is an awesome phone. I had a prepaid tMobile sim I used for calls but primarily used the WiFi function. However, tMobile’s 3G network was supposed to be fairly strong where I live and I was very unhappy with it so I returned the phone to await a Verizon version. There is no question I will buy the N1 again.

  • brooklynbatman

Big carriers like Verizon and AT&T get to call their shots because they have the ability to sell more handsets than T-Mo, Sprint, etc. Don’t be surprised when handset makers drop their pants for one of the big carriers and give them an exclusive. They don’t care if your feelings are hurt that their ultra cool product that does only 75% of what its billed to do is not available on your network. They only care about how many handsets they can sell in the shortest period of time possible. That’s how it works and thats what the stockholders look at. Everyone makes a big deal about new phones and all the ridiculous things they can do. I’ve been in the wireless phone industry for 17 years and I have yet to see a new phone platform launch that did not have problems. My advice is wait until the 2nd or 3rd release of a handset/OS before you buy. Remember Apple and Google are not traditionally companies that make phones. Look how long it took APple to get their stupid I-Phone to do MMS.

  • cooper b

does anyone know when in the spring it is going to come out? does that mean march or more like june??

  • Eric

I can’t wait to use the 3D speeds!

  • Bill

Actually, they’re both right and wrong. The “without service” (currently $529) GSM Nexus One will work on the AT&T network (just take your existing AT&T SIM card, and put it in) as a phone and on 3G (= slower) data device.

AT&T, however, “will not support” the Nexus One. Meaning, if you’re using it and having problems, if you try to call AT&T, they won’t help you with any handset specific issues.

It’s kind of the same way that AT&T “will not support” iPhones that have been “jailbroken” or unlocked.

  • topher

According to Leo Laporte, formerly of TechTV, he has a “source” at Google who has advised him of a Verizon launch date of March 23 for the N1. How reliable this is I can’t tell because I haven’t found a single corroborative story to support this claim. We can hope though.

  • mike

Will the Nexus One sinc with small business server outlook exchange? the droid will not unless you purchase 3rd party software. it works but you have to open software to get your email, calender ext…

  • Jorge Hernandez

I am Waitting for Verizon :)

  • Calm Down

Seriously Kilari, calm down. Why do you care that much? Are you related to Mr. Sprint himself or something?

  • Pat

Because Sprint SUCKS, that’s why! They have THE worst service out of any provider. I’d get Metro PCS before I got Sprint, no joke. We had 2 people, each with a Sprint phone, sitting in the same room next to each other. One sent a text to the other, and it took 4 MINUTES to receive the text! Why in the world would Google want to release it’s super-phone on that garbage network?

  • Archie

I so desperately wanted the Droid and its capabilities, and to remain on Verizon for coverage, and I waited for some time for its release. But exactly HOW ugly could they make that device? I hesitated for that reason alone, and now am glad that I held out for a while longer. The N1 looks infinitely sexier. The Droid looks like it was made by K Mart. What were they thinking? While I would personally like a physical keyboard, perhaps the voice-to-text features will allow me to function adequately without the KB.

  • Brandon

Im going with verizon because I’m renewing my contact with them in march.

  • Kristina

i’m so excited :] But like most phones the more advanced the more problems, I hope that’s not the case here because I really like it.

  • Kevin

Agreed. I am in the same boat Jim. They say spring 2010, does that mean fall 2010?

  • Tommy

Yeah, i’m doing the same here too. went to the Verizon store a couple times to get the Droid but i just could not get over that slide out keyboard?
Now i’m looking at the Nexus 1 everyday on the pc till i can get one from Verizon..

  • Matt

I am going to wait for it to come out on verizon. Even though its killing me inside and i was literally one click away from swtiching to tmobile cause i want it now, im still going to wait. All i know is spring needs to hurry up and come and they need to make a specific date of when we can order it from verizon. I want to be the fisrt to order it. The nexus one is definitely the phone of the yr.

  • Calm Down

Actually, I think T-Mobile has the worst service

  • Mr.No

I’d be careful badmouthing Google… a buddy of mine did a while ago and we never heard from him again….

  • Christy

I agree apbear. I prefer the Eris to the Droid by far, but wanted to wait with something with a little more “pep” and features. I am holding out for the Nexus One. The rep at the VZN store told me that it would have to be purchased FROM Google as an open CDMA then brought into the store. Has anyone else heard this? Is it true? I have been waiting since November for a phone I can commit 2 years to. I’m about 2 weeks from saying screw it and getting an ERIS. My old beat up HTC is dying on me!

  • michael

yes this is true and sprint is going for WiMAX… lte is the way to go here… I would be willing to bet that the reson that google is not relesing this on virizon untill spring is so it can be setup for virizons lte network…

  • michael

I am waiting for a company to allow voip, and not give us the crappy 5gb a mouth limit… if you double it vrz will charge you like $5,000

  • marie

same here, contract up waiting for the Nexus!

  • Don Juan

I have been wanting a phone like this for some time. (Something like an iPhone) I refused to get the iPhone because of the requirement of being on AT&T. (Unwilling to ever switch back) I love Verizon Service and network and I’m glad to finally see a device that will satisfy what I’ve been looking for.

My Verizon contract is up in March and my current phone will do until the Nexus One release. I just wish that they would hurry the hell up and at least announce a freaking release date so I can stop searching for it. Then again those smart SOB’s know that the secretive release date will continue to create lots of “Buzz” and interest which will create anticipation and desire and more sales which equates to more money.

    Clever little monkeys aren’t they!?!

  • Joshua M

I would probably wait for the Nexus One on VZW if my contract was expiring, or go to T-Mobile if I didn’t have one. But… I LOVE my HTC Droid Eris at a fraction of the cost.

  • Alicia

aaahhhh! I wish I would have found this thread 2 hours ago! I just bought the droid, and my best friend got the eris… I was looking at which was better and found this “Nexus” info. The droid has been great so far, but I haven’t used the keyboard pullout once and its very heavy. So I was thinking about getting the eris…. but now want the google phone!!!
Does anyone know if I can keep this phone for the 30 days and then pay the restocking fee and use my old POS until the nexus comes out? How long do you think i’ll have to wait? My phone got stolen and I’m using a VERY old Razor which—> we’ll i’d rather do a lot of things I hate doing before ever having to use this phone again :/
ANY SUGGESTIONS??? I want to be ethical and don’t want to “use” the droid just until the nexus comes out and return it.. but.. I really can’t stand this razor. It sucks. Doesn’t even save my contacts…
I found an Iphone the other day and am going to return it to AT&T so maybe that’ll make up for it. haha. please help!!!

    -Alicia

  • Jak

sweet! so i’ll wait and get LTE and a Nexus one! WOO HOO! win/win for me.

  • Nathan

You Say that Sprint should get the Nexus One, I say Verizon should get the iPhone, what we say doesn’t make much of a difference. Google didn’t put much advertising in the launch of the Nexus One, why not sell it the phone through the largest nationwide network that can fund the type of Advertising the phone needs. When verizon gets the Nexus One I’m going to buy it out right because its going to be one of the best phones on the market for verizon in comparison to the iPhone. Trust me if I could I would get an iPhone but I have the 9550 with Verizon because I switched from Sprint to Verizon due to the coverage and Customer support. When they lauch it to Verizon that is going to be one of the best Things because a 1.0 GHz Snapdragon and 3.7 OMLED Touch screen with a 5.0MP Camera and Flash that completely blows the Droid and the Eris out of the water.

  • Nathan

Where did you buy your phone from Bestbuy or Verizon, because they both have a 30 day return policy and of my knowledge, Verizon doesnt have a restocking fee and the only phone that has a restocking fee for bestbuy is the iPhone and that is 10% I would definately return it and wait for the Nexus One because you dont want to have to spend +$500 on the phone outright. The only thing that these phones kinda suck at is App space only 512MB onboard for apps because they can’t be saved to the SD Cards….but still an awsome phone

  • blah

Anyone know if there waiting to launch the nexus one with Verizons LTE network?

  • mo

“upvote” for being hilarious and probably true

  • nexusisG2

Dude all of you guys are retarded Tmobile backed google andriod when no one would touch it with a stick…verizon is only getting any android devices simply because they have BIG POCKETS…the service on tmobile isnt bad actually im form tampa, fl and my g1 got 10 times better service then my envy. moto q or my iphone and my ole school htc at&t 8125. Love my nexus and tmbile

  • Kris

Does anyone know if Verizon will offer N1 as Global Ready with Quad GSM?

  • Richard Hartness

ive heard different stories , i like the nexus one look and screens most of all, tried the droid , its great and you can download screens, but hated the keyboard, eris was great too but screen was small, it was kind of like a mini nexus one, why do they make it so frustrating to get nexus, im ticked, im ready to go phoneless, but will probably get it if verizon gets it like they said, and the rebate junk is frustrating at stores, best buys offers no rebate buying, but they dont have tmobil and cant get nexus , what a crock for the consumer, to have to order on line now, pay full price or go with contract with not the best carrier, just a frustrating mess too me, oh well , just venting and hopeing things will get easier to puchase nexus, thanks

  • amanda

so it’s past march 23…… so when exactly is the nexus one going to be available to Verizon customers?!

  • Burr

Does your Nexus really work out ok with pageplus? How’s that so far?
I am about want to purchase Nexus but not sure about compatible.
    Thanks in advance!
