India’s Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched the first urban WiMAX network in Ernakulam, a district of Kerala in southern India, and WiMAX signals also reach Tripunithura, Kalamassery, Aluva and Angamaly municipalities.

Currently the network is comprised of 25 base stations and the plan is to bring the figure to 900 to expand throughout Kerala in a two-phase expansion programme.

The first phase will include 450 towers, covering all major cities, district headquarters and prominent towns. 49 towers will be set up in Ernakulam and Idukki districts in the second phase next year, extending the coverage to panchayat areas as well.

BSNL is initially offering WiMAX on two unlimited tariff plans, with bandwidth ranging from 512kbps to 2Mbps. The home plan costs Rs 999, while the business plan has a price of Rs 1,999 per month.

And in case you wonder (you probably don’t), Aviat Networks was the main supplier for the network.
