Sony Ericsson’s Satio is going to get a firmware updates and we have the change log. If you don’t remember, the Symbian-powered handset has a 12-megapixel camera, WiFi, 3G, Bluetooth, GPS and a large touch screen. Here are the details of the additional features of the coming firmware:

  • Support for WVGA video recording – The already great video recording will be enhanced to fit the wide screen format and hence resolution is also slightly increased to 864 * 480 pixles. (the preset size will still be VGA, user has to change to get WVGA)
  • Upload of pictures to Facebook – It will be possible to upload pictures directly from the picture menu you have on the home screen or from the Media UI.
  • Conversational messaging – “Conversations” will be nicely integrated in the messaging menu in order to easily find and inspire to more conversations with your friends.
  • DLNA support – The new software will support DLNA media server for easy transfer of audio and still pictures. (Note that video is not supported)
  • UI improvements – On top of above, several minor UI improvements have been done in order to optimize the user experience.
  • The Facebook application that is now available on PlayNow for free download will be included in the sw.

Ok, wich version then? Newer then the R1CA037?

    Did it R2AK006 18-02-2010
but they turned some things back, like big photo of the caller, later on so the smaller thumbnail.
Still same issues that the phone doesn’t really recognizes my old plantronics260, a a2dp headset, with 2 cables, one with a mic and one without. The one with mic works fine.
But with the cable on the stereo with music, when somebody calls, you should be able to take the phonecall trough the phone. And when you hang up, the music starts playing over the headset again. but the touchscreen freezes as well as the answer buttons. When I iniciate a call and directly press use phone, it sometimes work.

The videorecording is ok and now in big WVGA 864×480! don’t move the camera to quickly because more static could now be more easier to see. Running several other tasks, and again music on bluetooth, the screen capture shows black distortion almost all over the screen. This is only when I have the music switched to the bluetooth headset with the cable without mic! So it’s becuase the phone gets confused with to much audio signals coming back and forth, because what the screen shows is also depending on what the audio signals give.

I had it better working on the R1CA037, then it also freezed up with bluetooth music on and a caller comes in. But now the screen freezes even up more. But I must say I ask a lot!
My plantronics is probably near death, it’s 4 years old now.
Or in music playback time: 4000 hours :)
Are there other users who have a newer better working bluetooth headset with the satio?

Update: without bluetooth music headset it works like sunshine, with and with cable with mic it also can multi-task like a king, but with the cable without mic, it gets unstabile.
So I think it has something to do with the bluetooth services how there being set on and off.

New: bigger photocall later on smaller, direct acces to dialer while calling, facebook app, direct upload to facebook, ability to stream pictures and music from remote server, WVGA Recording, integrated conversations,

slightly minors are: Still not good support for older bluetooth headsets, Still some hasitation when you try to do extreme multi-tasking, like lock on/off/on/off and it gets confused. Touchscreen freezes then, you have to wait 2 sec. And the wvga resolution is more blur while moving camera, but thats probably logical, more pixels more static.

But in the end, while im still testing what the benefits of R2AK006 are against the older version R1CA037.

I love this phone. camera is fantastic. phone is pretty awesome…
HOWEVER, I think they’ve lost a lot of the usual goodies that my walkman had that were just so great to have. This is a list of the things no longer available on this phone that my Walkman 800i actually has:
    – Auto retry/redial on connection failure (fantastic feature to have!)
    – voice dialing (Why why why take this away???)
    – graphic equalizer within the media player
    – LED light for video capture (which is actually pretty darn good despite this)
    – volume controls, earphone controls and so forth active when playing media/phone locked. etc

I love the camera on this phone, however… why not make a phone where you could actually attach a proper camera lens? much like the Sony Alpha series cameras – it would make for an awesome combination!

The other issues are as follows:
    – Symbian is a little slow and not as stable as I’d like.
    – A full qwerty keyboard would have improved the functionality of this phone 10 fold.
    – I dislike the selection of files within the symbian operating system. in most cases you have to scroll through an entire list of your media etc which in my case is thousands of files long…. WHY?!?!?!?! Why not keep to the standard folder-based file browsing?

My recommendation… Get yourself a Nokia N97 – same functionality, much more memory, same size… PLUS.. A FULL QWERTY KEYBOARD. the camera isn’t as good, but I think that without a proper optical lens you won’t miss the difference. The N97 also has a much bigger battery and will easily out last the Satio on a single charge. both have great bandwidth etc. N97 also has a “gamepad” type layout for the keyboard which is great if you wanna download one of the many freely available games on the net… satio will have to resort to using the touch screen for gameplay – again, not cool.
Available apps are the same for both phones so there’s no comparisson there, however there are more loaded on the N97 and they work better with the phone as a result of the qwerty keyboard.

Similar comments go for the Experia – no keyboard… no dice. Typing messages on a touch screen sucks. they are much less responsive, give you no feedback (as a button would) and are difficult to hit accurately, thus leaving messages with utterly mis-spelled words if you’re not careful.
