New Android browser: SPIDERSS oozes functionality and ugliness

Tired of the stock Android browser? There are a couple of great alternatives already in the Android Market, as well as some even better upcoming alternatives on the way. The newest release in the Market is SPIDERSS, which combines an internet browser, RSS reader, and social networking services in one. Sounds great, yeah? Well, it is, if you don’t mind using a browser that looks like it was made a couple years ago. In short, it’s ugly.

The browser comes with loads of features. The face of the browser is very minimalist, with most of the features are revealed when the menu button is pressed. When pressed, a variety of options are revealed. An address bar, as well as a search bar are displayed on top, and the option to search within the page resides on the bottom. The usual suspects, such as bookmarks, open windows, add bookmarks and settings can all be found here. Also found here, and seemingly only here, are the zoom in and out buttons.

The quality of the pages are where the browser seems to have the worst trouble. Pages render in a somewhat blurry state, making the browsing experience less enjoyable. In my short time with the browser, I received a call, and then shortly went back to the application, only for it to freeze my entire device to the point I had to take the battery out. It’s hard to say something positive about this browser, but i have yet to utilize it’s RSS feed, or social networking features.

I can say that I’ve experience much better quality browsers, but I can not say I’ve used a browser with more features. The key is to keep in mind is that this is very beta. Once this gets out of beta state, then the devs can focus on the smoothness of the browser as a whole, but for right now, I say: stay away from SPIDERSS.
