Qualcomm

Qualcomm has opened an R&D center in Vienna, Austria, which will be responsible for the design and development of augmented reality and related technologies. The new center will work in conjunction with Qualcomm’s existing center in San Diego and take advantage of intellectual property recently acquired from Imagination Computer Services. In that sense, Imagination’s team of researchers will join the Qualcomm Austria Research Center.

Few words about Imagination (from the press release):

Headquartered in Vienna, Imagination was founded in 1998 by researchers from the Vienna University of Technology. The company’s technology has been featured in showcase augmented reality applications for a broad range of global consumer brands. Imagination’s researchers have also been at the forefront of the academic community, publishing numerous important research papers in augmented reality and related fields over the past 15 years.

Now we hope Qualcomm won’t lock the augmented reality market with its patents, but will rather make something usable…
