India’s Videocon Group has become the 13th mobile network in the country after launching the initial GSM service in Chennai. Over the next 100 days, the company expects to roll out coverage to 100 towns and cities and be classed as a pan-Indian operator. As part of the plan, the company wants to acquire 3G spectrum in the forthcoming license auction.
Overall, Videocon will invest around $3 billion in the network infrastructure and has already secured a tower sharing deal to access around 70,000 towers. The end goal is to reach profitability in 2013.
According to the group’s chairman, Venugopal Dhoot, the Indian mobile market only looks overcrowded. In real life, the teledensity of India is still only 46%, leaving a large untapped market that Videocon plans to target.
“With our target customer base of 100 million customers, we want to be among the top three players in this market in the next three years,” he added.
