HTC’s CEO Peter Chou said off-handedly in an interview that “it looks like the growth in the U.S market is faster than others” this year. Looking at the combined performance of the Nexus One, Touch Pro2, and Hero in 2009, there’s certainly a case for such a statement, but it seems crazy that HTC is growing more quickly than Apple in America. Chou doesn’t quote any particular numbers, but earlier studies of U.S. mobile platform penetration back him up. Barring the Motorola Droid, most of the headway made for Android has been a direct result of HTC smartphones – last year, HTC moved a solid 5.5 to 6 million handsets in the U.S.
The upcoming year is looking good for HTC, especially with the HD2, EVO, Incredible, Desire, and Legend on the way. However, RIM still has a solid foothold in enterprise, and Apple is the elephant in the room when it comes to the mobile consumer market. Aside from the juicy U.S. market, HTC hopes to be working their way into emerging markets in the next year or two.
