If you’re waiting with bated breath for Windows Phone 7 you’ll be happy to know that some more details about Microsoft’s latest mobile operating system have hit the web.
Like Gmail with Android, WP7 will be tied to your Windows Live ID, so if you’re already in Microsoft’s cloud world, this should be a smooth transition. This ID will also be your way into the Windows Marketplace for mobile (remember, that app store will be the only official way to get new apps), as well as the key for your phone to synchronize its data with Microsoft’s servers.
Another interesting fact is that device makers won’t be able to change the tiled-Metro UI that much. An LG Electronics or Samsung will be able to add its own tiles but won’t be able to scrap the UI entirely for something like Sense UI. These manufacturers will be able to customize the boot screen, as will carriers. Bing will be the default search engine (no surprise) but you’ll be able to change the default search within Internet Explorer.
Other tidbits include that it the 32-bit OS will have a dual-layer architecture with the kernal layer and user layer, and manufacturers will be responsible for the drivers for 2D and 3D graphics. Application processes have up to 1 GB of virtual memory and 2 GB of memory will be given to overall processes.
Nothing out of the ordinary here, but it’s good to see some more information get fleshed out. I don’t know about you but I’m pumped for Microsoft’s next mobile OS – something about leaving an app-centric world for a more holistic experience really appeals to me. Hopefully, we’ll soon see some more handsets rocking this OS.
