The WePad looked to take aim at Apple iPad. With a great spec sheet in tow, one of the things that’s really concerning? Its name. It’s worse than iPad! WePad sounds like something that has been soiled, so it’s good to see that the tablet has recently undergone a name change. Meet the WeTab.
According to the WeTab’s website, the name change is due to, “To clearly differentiate our products within the international market for tablet computers, as of today we have changed the product name of our tablet computer from WePad to WeTab.” Smart move. There’s nothing worse than having a visceral image of a piss pad when you’re just thinking of a tablet computer. Let’s not get into the images we think of with Apple iPad, but thank god the iTampon jokes have ceased.
It’s not clear from their official statement, but it certainly is possible that Apple forced the company to change the name of their tablet to strike out all references to anything “pad.” This is all speculation, but it sure does seem plausible that Apple would want to kill any potential “pad” competition.
For those of you who don’t recall the WeTab, well, we don’t blame you. Not because the WeTab is a bad device – it’s a great looking device – but because it’s just one of the dozens of Android tablets that will be making its way out to market sometime this year. The WeTab is one of the nicest tablet alternatives that will be available to compete with the iPad. I’d still hands-down pick the Adam from Notion Ink over anything today, but the WeTab is still a very nice device.
The WeTab sports an 11.6 inch capacitive touchscreen, an Intel Atom N450 processor clocking out at 1.66 GHz, 1 GB of RAM, and will come with either 16GB or 32GB of storage, both with a SDHC card expansion slot up to 32GB. With a 1.3 mega pixel camera on the front of the device, and Adobe Flash and Air support rounding out the device, you’ve got a very decent iPad alternative on the market. Now if it could only live down its old name.
So what do you think? If you’re not completely sold on the big iPhone called the iPad, what other tablet are you interested in? Does the WeTab fit the bill, or is it something else?
