HTC Desire receiving Froyo in June?

I think we may be able to put this one on the highest shelf in the rumors department, but according to a HTC representative, the Desire will be receiving the Android 2.2 update on June 23rd. While that wasn’t explicitly confirmed by the rep, what was said points to a very specific Froyo feature.

So, the story goes like this: an XDA member phoned HTC customer support to complain about the lack of storage for their HTC Desire. After picking a good fight with the Customer Service representative, the customer was handed over to the Supervisor. After getting the obvious answer any Customer Service Supervisor is trained to give, this particular rep slipped out a simple, “But you never heard this from me…A new update is coming the 23rd of June, and you will be able to put some apps on to the micro sd card.” Bingo!

This option is obviously a feature that’s found Froyo. The lack of applications on the SD card is an Android limitation. It’s always been that way, and not until Android 2.2 OS “Froyo” has the issue been solved. More than likely, if you’re a member of XDA, you probably have more knowledge of what your device is capable of than the Customer Service Representatives themselves.

But what’s the possibility of this really happening? I’d say if there’s a device to get Android 2.2 first, besides the Nexus One, it’s the Desire for sure. Then the Evo and Incredible. But it just sounds way too soon. To imagine that HTC has already ported their Sense UI over to Android 2.2 OS sounds almost unbelievable. It took the Droid Eris a long time to get the Android 2.1 OS update, after all. I’m not saying this isn’t possible, and I’m hoping it’s true, but I see it as very, very unlikely.

What’re your thoughts on this? Do you think that HTC can updating their custom UI in time for a June Froyo update with Sense?

Saying that, there may not be major API changes between 2.1 and 2.2, unlike the massive changes between android 1.5/1.6 and 2.1, apps2sd isn't a feature that needs to be implemented, the applications app is in androids source, so it's not up to htc to do anything with it, all they need to do is update their sense, which is really just the homescreen and some custom views and widgets, which may already work on 2.2. I'd put good money down that HTC already have a working 2.2 and are currently on the testing.

I am hopeful for june 23rd

Maybe the change won't be an update to 2.2 but simply adding a version of A2SD to the current 2.1 Desire rom, if Paul O'brien and Cyanogen can figure it out fr pre-2.2 , why can't HTC?
