Trimble’s outdoorsman app for Android was released last July, and since updated with offline maps. Recently, Trimble Outdoors version 1.4.1 was released with a few new features, namely uploading geotagged videos taken while on an expedition to YouTube, and new support for Bing’s terrain maps. I have yet to put Bing maps and Google maps side-by-side in this context, but I tend to err on the side of Google – still, options are always welcome. You can already upload geotagged pictures and sound clips through Trimble, so video was a logical upgrade.
Trimble Outdoors is a general purpose outdoors app, offering detailed GPS directions with digital compass, progress tracking including elevation, and route planning with waypoints and a web component. If you’re having trouble figuring out where to go, Trimble plugs into a database of trips from Backpacker Magazine. Though the app seems mostly geared towards hikers and campers, there’s obviously plenty of utility for bikers, canoers, or pretty much anyone going anywhere outdoors.
If you’re one of those fresh air types, you can pick it up at the Android Market link below for $9.99, or scope out the Trimble Outdoors page for a closer look. They also have AllSport GPS if you’re more into the fitness side of things.
