We had heard whispers of a refreshed BlackBerry Bold model, the 9700a, and today some rumoured specs have bubbled up. The 9700a will supposedly be packing 512 MB of RAM like the Bold 9650 that just launched on Verizon today, along with a 5 megapixel camera, and OS 6.0 (including the fancy new Webkit browser).
The jump from the Bold 9000 to the 9700 wasn’t quite big enough for me to consider an upgrade, but the 9700a sounds like it would have enough new in it to make the jump. The 5 megapixel camera is pretty attractive, and the only RIM handset rumored to have one so far is the 9670 clamshell and maybe the 9800 slider. BlackBerry OS 6 will be an adequate facelift, offering a few new functions, but mostly a polished, smoother UI. We can only expect that, like the Bold 9650, the 9700a will keep the original’s casing and stick predominately to under-the-hood upgrades – the above photoshop job should give you an idea of what to expect.
Release date is pegged for “a couple of months”, and coming out at least on AT&T. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything else!
