We know that Android 2.2 (Froyo) is set to hit the Motorola Droid sometime in late July, and as it has done previously, it looks like Verizon is sending out an over-the-air update for select Droid owners.
This was done with Android 2.1, a small test group is given the update, and if it goes smoothly, more people will start to receive the notification. Previously, when the official OTA was coming, Verizon sent it out in batches of about 100,000 every day until everyone finally got a taste of Eclair.
Now, it looks like the same thing may be happening with Froyo, and we couldn’t be happier. We’ve yet to see any real confirmation of the OTA being sent out, but this is likely the case.
This would be a good time for Verizon to do this because if there are issues with the builds sent to the select phones, they have a month to tie up the loose ends and have it ready to be sent out to the masses by that late July launch window promised.
But then again, the 2.1 update was delayed quite a few times before Droid owners actually received it in full force. Hopefully, Verizon has learned from past mistakes and it is ready to try this again.
The thing that kills me most about OTA updates is the waiting aspect. The person sitting right next to you with the same phone may receive the update, and you still end up waiting a week before you get yours. This isn’t a problem for Apple, as its software is available for all at the same time.
But that’s not to say you won’t run into problems with this method either. While updating my iPod Touch to iOS 4, iTunes took an hour to restore my device before it failed, and failed and failed. I never got it to restore, but eh, I got the update. Both the OTA and wired update methods have benefits and flaws, but availability is better with wired.
On the other hand another benefit to having OTA updates is that you can be sitting on a bus, and update your phone, without the need of a computer.
In either case, let’s hope Droid owners are seeing the real deal.
If you’ve received the OTA on you Motorola Droid, hit us up in the comments!
