HTC EVO 4G Gets Software Update Over The Air, Sadly Not Froyo

When we heard there was an update going out for Sprint’s HTC Evo 4G, there was a very brief and fleeting moment of, “Froyo?!” Of course not, don’t be silly. However, there is an update that EVO users can download OTA. It’s called System Upgrade 1.47.651.1 and it’s just a measly 21.43MB file so it’s certainly not anything major. It’s likely bug fixes, and according to rumors, Wi-Fi fixes, but we’re sure the majority of you are hoping that this update will triple your battery life to a whopping eight hours of use! Seriously, though, the battery problem needs to be solved ASAP.

This update completely killed my phone. Halfway through the install, the phone went blank and it won't respond to anything now. I brought it to a Sprint store and they confirmed it's DEAD.

  • Joe

I think this just happened to me

  • bwthomas

Got the download this morning over 4G. The entire process, download and update, took less than ten minutes. No problems here.

  • Ollitsac

This update killed my phone too!!!!

  • droid

    Fixed the wifi issues!

  • Rebecca

This update took about 15 mins. on my phone. But it finally came back up with no problem. My bluetooth connectivity has been very buggy. I hope this update fixes that.

  • Trevor

Agree….my phone died too and brought back to Best Buy to get a new one

  • Steven

For about two minutes after the OTA my phone was paused in the boot up. Post OTA = The WiFI defintely seems more perky.

  • Paul

Update when smoothly… no issues here!
I would like to know what the updated changes are.

    Want better battery life?
I found it on the sprint website under reviews of the phone. At first I was very disappointed by the battery life only to find a fix. The phone drains battery when searching for GSM network not CDMA, whcih is what Sprint operates on.I fixed it and this phone is amazing!!!! Took off charger yesterday at 8am and still at 60% including email, calls, searching net etc. Here is the fix – once you do it, this phone's potential is unreal!!!!First things first, go into Settings> About Phone> Battery> Battery Use> Cell Standby. Assuming your phone has been on, or off the charger for ~10 minutes, it should show Time Without Signal at around 50%.Next thing, press HOME, and bring up the dialer. Dial *#*#4636#*#* (Do not press "Call"). After a second, it should bring up the "Testing" menu.Go into Phone Information, press MENU, and tap "select radio band." You should experience a Force Close, don't panic, this was supposed to happen. Scrolling down shows that the preferred network type is GSM auto (prl). What this means is that even though you are connected to a CDMA network, your phone is trying to find a GSM network, preventing the radio from sleeping, and causing excessive battery drain.Remedy this by tapping GSM auto (prl), and changing it to CDMA auto (prl).

Has anybody been able to recover from their phone being "killed" by this update? Mine's been dead now for over 6 hours and I've already got a replacement ordered…but it's over a week out. I really don't believe that it's dead, I just can't get it to respond at all. Anyone?

  • Teena

mine updated fine, but I still can't get my voice dialer to work????

  • natalie

thanks Gregg, just changed the settings on my EVO like u said…… hope it works!!

  • john

thanks gregg, just did mine too. will let you know how it works on my end. i play alot on the phone during the day, emails, craigslist, etc, and my battery life sucked!! ill charge it tonight and see what happens tomorrow. question though, by changing it like this, does it affect anything at all, as far as network goes, in town, out of town, reception, etc?

  • Marcus

Hey I checked mine and it was already set to that, I checked the phone info first before I hit the menu button. When I hit the menu button and clicked set radio then it read gsm. Anybody else check the info before they clicked the menu button?

  • Dee

    Mine just died… :-(

  • Dee

Thanks Gregg, I too hope this works. Great post.

  • Jack D.

Greg forgot to mention that you need to do that code and cdma stuff every reboot.

  • Anthony J.

I updated my phone today with no problems. I went and rechecked to see if there were any other updates and it showed that my phone is currently up to date. I do not know what happened to everyone else, but when I updated the phone, I followed the instructions and let update do its job. It took about twenty minutes to update and the phone turned itself off three times. When the phone came on the fourth time the phone let me know that the update was successful.

  • Veronica

I didn’t get the update and when I go to search for updates it says none found and my phone is on the old version, I checked, anyone know what’s going on?

  • john

hey everyone, not saying greg isnt right with his battery info, but if you do this, just type in *#*#4636#*#*, then just hit phone information and scroll down, it will probably already say cdma auto prl? when you hit the select radio band, it automatically resets it to gsm, then lets you choose what you want. but to check and see what your phone is on already, just type that it, then hit phone info and scroll down and see what yours is set on. i tried this on 3 of my friends phones at work today, and they were all already set to cdma. good info though!!! but unfortunately, it didnt help my battery life, it is still the same as it was.

  • john

jack d, you dont need to do that code everytime you reboot either. like i just mentioned in my previous post, when you hit select radio band, it resets it to start with gsm, that is why you are seeing gsm everytime you reboot. try and you will see. set it to cdma, then reboot your phone. type in the code, hit phone info, scroll down, and see what it is set on. let me know, im frequently wrong, lol. just thought i would share with everyone.

Changing the EVO to CDMA, will it not be able to work on the 3G/4G network? Will the internet run slower and downloading stuff take longer?

  • lestat

Update went fine on my phone but now my supposed 3g is now slower than 1xrtt.
I am taking a top speed of 100kbps using speedtest.net program.
    Prior i was atleast getting 500kbps. (0.5mbps).

My wifes phone has not done the update and both phones side by side hers gets around 450kbps and mine gets about 100kbps TOPS

Fvck sprint and their shit network and fv k htc and fheir half assed programming

  • Spyder

The update killed my phone halfway through the process too. Wouldn't even turn back on. Brought it back to Best Buy and they confirmed the same, got a replacement phone and had no problem with the update…..weird!
