Gowalla’s social check-in app for BlackBerry has updated their beta to include commenting on others’ check-ins and photo uploading to spots, along with a few nice keyboard shortcuts. It still seems like they’re hung up on the iPhone’s way of doing notifications of friend check-ins (through obnoxious popups), but maybe someday before 1.0 they’ll discover the magic of the Messages app.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look, Gowalla uses your phone’s GPS to allow you to check in at particular user-generated “spots”, and share comments, leave virtual items, and post pictures. The social element allows you to follow where your friends are going, be they fellow Gowalla users, or on Facebook or Twitter. Since the BlackBerry app is still very much a work in progress, it’s hard to tear myself away from the existing Foursquare application, which fills the same need for now. Virtual items and picture sharing is kind of a neat addition that might eventually get me to switch.

The next update should include trips and items, but if you’re packing another kind of phone, download links to their respective versions are below. Download the BlackBerry version by going to www.Gowalla.com on your mobile browser.
