The HTC HD2 is already a beast of a smartphone with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor but an app will let you extract even more power out of the Windows Mobile handset.
The Leo Auto CPU app lets you overclock the HD2 and bring it to higher levels. The latest version also includes auto-apply at startup and speed control sliders. Head over here to download the app.
The HD2 is a monster smartphone with a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen and all the connectivity goodness you’d expect from a high-end handset but the device may be hamstrung by the Windows Mobile operating system that powers it. Sure, it sold out when it was initially released, but the IntoMobile team had a hard time recommending it because the platform is somewhat of a dead end.
Don’t get me wrong: Windows Mobile 6.5 is a highly-capable OS that matches the features of its competitors but Microsoft is focusing its attention and resources on Windows Phone 7, as it should. This means the HD2 will lag behind the competitors as the months and years pass.
What’s more, I get the distinct feeling that the developers and tinkerers have moved away from Windows Mobile. That used to be the best thing about Windows Mobile, as it was a blast to load up a custom ROM and find small, innovative apps. Those tinkerers have rightly moved on to Android, from what I’m gathering.
Still, those are problems that may not impact mainstream users and the HTC HD2 is still a pretty darn good device for what it is. That big screen will wow your friends, it’s a speedy device even without the overclocking, the 5-megapixel camera is pretty good, there’s social networking integration and there are a wealth of apps available for Windows Mobile.
