Google sees Android sales increase 350% in UK compared to previous quarter

You’ve likely been sleeping under a rock if you hadn’t notice Android OS has been growing at a rapid pace. The Q2 numbers from the UK illustrate just this, showing the Google mobile OS growing around 350% from Q1. That’s impressive, no matter what the absolute numbers are.

In just three months, Android has gone from only 3% of the mobile contract market in the UK to 13.2% in a report from GfK. The number is quite stifling, but if you’ve had your eye on the OS, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to you. With bigger, badder, and faster Android handsets hitting all over the world, and a new “superphone” being announced almost every other week, it’s not a surprise that Android OS been growing like wildfire. Until now, Android adoption has seen the greatest growth within the Unites States, so it’s nice to see that the trend is going elsewhere in the world.

The UK’s market for smartphones is increasing very fast as well, where phones with advanced OS’ represent 73.5% of the contract market. Megan Baldock, a GfK analyst points out that:

The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name. Operating Systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right

Android is becoming more and more of a household name, and for the most part it’s still just on smartphones. Although with virtually none in sight, Android tablets are said to take the world by storm by the end of the year, coming in various sizes and features. When that happens, not only will the little green robot grow in market share, but much more in consumer mind share as well. Who knows what else this year will hold for Android’s growth, but it’s doubtful that the OS will be seeing a decline anytime soon.

The holiday season looks like it’s going to be a pretty good time of year if you’re a techie.
