Are you a fan of the American Museum of Natural History? Do you also happen to own an iPhone? If you answered an emphatic “Heck yes!” to both of those question, or maybe even a less enthusiastic exclamation, you should consider the AMNH Explorer app for the iPhone. The application works as a companion to the museum visitor and is complete with interactive maps, “indoor GPS,” and 2 or 3 dimensional guided tour maps that take visitors to different exhibits.

How does it work? Know Your Cell reports:

Made possible by a grant from Bloomberg L.P., AMNH Explorer utilizes a brand new network of Wi-Fi access points installed throughout the museum. Once connected, this free Wi-Fi network triangulates the location of any iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running the AMNH Explorer app, and tracks the user’s location in real time.

Sounds like a pretty clever use of the Wi-Fi system within the museum, and most definitely useful to both first time and veteran museum visitors. You can also share your adventures with your friends on Facebook and Twitter if they can’t make it out to the museum themselves.

Thankfully, the app can be had for free from the iTunes market and works with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.
