For the third day in a row, we’re getting a chance to check out the pre-release BlackBerry 9780, which is almost too bad considering how little there is to check out. The video gives us a full harware tour, confirming that it is indeed identical to the 9700. The software review is nothing especially new – we’ve already seen a lot of OS 6, but I don’t think we’ve seen much of the Contacts app so far, which enjoyed a little facelift (starts at 2:35). Even the click app is looking a little fresher. The welcome e-mail was from T-Mobile, hinting at the release partner for this particular BlackBerry. We do get a few specs, the juiciest being confirmation of a 5 megapixel camera…
- 624Mhz Processor
- 512MB Flash RAM
- OS 6.0.0.125 (possible launch build)
- 480×360 Resolution Screen TFT, 65K colors
- 5.0 MP Camera with LED Flash
- Trackpad
- GSM / UMA / HSPA+?
- Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP
- Wi-Fi b/g (possibly N?)
- 512 MB of RAM
- Gun Metal Bezel
Again, it’s good to see OS 6 handling just fine without a touchscreen, but if OS 6 will eventually find its way to the 9700, how many people will upgrade for a better camera and some more app memory? Probably not many, but for anyone in my shoes who didn’t feel compelled to make the jump from the 9000 to the 9700, the 9780 might be our cue to get with the times.
