Google Maps for BlackBerry Preparing Update with Places

Last week, Google Maps for Android was updated with a new feature that placed two new icons in your library for Places and Latitude. The prior let you quickly find places within a certain category on Google Maps for mobile, while the latter is the well-established location-sharing service. Latitude’s been on BlackBerry for awhile, and now through a hidden update, you can get Places, too.

Although you can’t get the updated by going through Google’s usual mobile portal, you can access it with some URL acrobatics. As you can see from the screenshot showing what’s new, it also includes automatically refreshing for new search results, and business hours. However, I still haven’t been able to pull up any of the new features (which is probably why you can’t download this from the public page). The final build will probably get shot out soon, accompanied by a post on the Google Mobile Blog, so we’ll keep our eyes peeled.

Want to give it a spin? Head on over here to get downloading Google Maps for BlackBerry 4.4.0.
