Sprint HTC EVO 4G on a table

If you’ve been kicking yourself for not pulling the trigger on the Android 2.2 Froyo update that was temporarily posted for your Sprint HTC EVO 4G, consider yourself relieved of remorse. We’re getting reports left and right that Sprint has started seeding the Android 2.2 update to Evo 4G units around the country. It’s not clear when the updates started flowing out through those magical airwaves, but we do know that the Froyo rollout has kicked off a day ahead of schedule.

If you’re lucky enough to have an EVO in your hand, and you haven’t already updated to that fleeting Android 2.2 ROM that was posted a few days ago, you can initiate this update by navigating to Settings > Software Updates > Firmware Updates on your big-screened HTC smartphone. If you’re not sure what version you’re on, you might as well just check. It doesn’t take long and it certainly won’t hurt you.

The new Android build for the Evo 4G brings with it a slew of enhancements. Things like a faster overall operating system (thanks to a JIT compiler), faster JavaScript performance thanks to the Chrome-source V8 JavaScript engine, Bluetooth voice dialing, support for Adobe Flash 10.1, apps on SD and a pre-loaded Flashlight app are just a few of the things you can expect to see on your EVO once you get it playing nice with Froyo. Yes, we said a “Flashlight app.” It’s capable of lighting up with variable light intensity settings. What more could you want?

I did the update last night at 5:00 PM Pacific time. Worked fine for me. Only problem I have is that I should have uninstalled Flash 10.1 for Android 2.1 prior to upgrading. Now I need to factory default the phone to fix my issues. Other than that it is running fast. Quadrant score of 1124. 41 Mflops on Linpak. Nice new features.

I updated last night (about 8pm EST) without a hitch. About 15 mins from start to finish. One observation. a couple of times it looked as though the update were frozen and I was tempted to pud the on/off button. I left it alone and the installed completed flawlessly.

To get the 2.2 update over the air, it's actually Settings->System Updates->HTC software update, not Firmware Updates as the author references in his article.

Tought luck. I did the update this morning and had no problems. I think theres a way to factory reset the phone when you turn it on and holding either up or down volume key. Not sure exactly how its done though.
