Verizon Wireless DROID 2 advertised in Sunday newspapers as ‘coming soon’

The Verizon Motorola DROID 2 hit the advertisement section of select Sunday newspapers in a Verizon-branded insert that advertised the Android handset as “coming soon”. Verizon is taking an unusual marketing strategy with this upcoming flagship handset and is advertising it in flyers and the summer catalog prior to making the handset official (unless you count Twitter, of course). With all the information and spy shots that have been leaked about this Motorola handset, perhaps Big Red decided to cut its losses and play to this blog-reading, tech savvy crowd by including the DROID 2 in some of its less prominent marketing materials.

It makes sense for Verizon to embrace this reverse form of advertisement. Every time the wireless carrier drops an image of the DROID 2 with a tagline of coming soon, the news and its ensuing excitement ripple through the tech world. Though it is nice to see the handset once again in print, it would be even nicer if Verizon would make this handset official and confirm the August 12th launch date and the $199 pricing for this upcoming Android offering.

The sooner, the better as those early adopters of the DROID X are fast approaching their 30-day return window and we imagine that there are some DROID X owners who would prefer the smaller form factor and QWERTY-slider of the DROID 2. So Verizon, what do you say? Are you going to come clean soon or stay tight-lipped as long as possible?
