India’s SMS GupShup hits 35 million users, 3.5 million communities; Expands into the Philippines

India - SMS GupShup hits 35 million users, 3.5 million communities

SMS GupShup, which is India’s largest mobile social network we talked about in the past, announced that they have crossed 35 million users in India, making them more popular than Google Orkut, Facebook and Twitter. As a result of this growth, the company doubled its message processing in just six months.

All those users are spurred across 3.5 million communities, which is 1.5 million more than 8 months ago. These impressive figures have thus far attracted over 150 advertisers, including such brands as Microsoft, eBay, Pepsi, Cadbury, Nokia, Ford, Nike, Maybelline, Dell, Kingfisher, Sun Microsystems and ING Financial. The companies run SMS ads and create their own branded communities that are very similar to fan sites.

Additionally, SMS GupShup announced expansion into the Philippines, which is often called the texting capital of the world. The social network plans to partner with carriers and help every member of the ecosystem along the way — carriers will see an even increased use of messaging services, while end users will be able to keep up with their buddies even from the entry-level feature phones…
