We knew that Acer was going to back Android in a big way and some spy shots have recently leaked out about its latest device and it looks pretty good.
The new handset will reportedly be called Liquid Metal because of its aluminum casing. The picture is from a Russian website but there’s no word on how well this smartphone will hunt down Sarah Connor (oh man, that reference was really crammed in there).
The Acer Liquid Metal should launch with Android 2.2, so the device should be ready for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 right out of the box. Look for improved web browsing and a snappy overall performance with the latest version of Android.
The Acer Liquid Metal should also come with a 3.6-inch capacitive touch screen, a Qualcomm MSM7230-1 processor, a camera (we don’t know the megapixel count) and LED flash, as well as Bluetooth 3.0. These specs look solid but it’s by no means a top-shelf Android phone like the Droid X or EVO 4G.
Still, the Acer Liquid Metal certainly looks cool and the specs and Android 2.2 mean it should be a solid smartphone. There’s no word on a release date, regional availability or pricing but the company would be crazy to charge more than $200 with a new contract. That’s all contingent on if Acer can secure carrier deals and subsidies and I’m not sure that’s an easy thing to do.
The company is about to unleash an Android surge, as we can expect multiple tablets, smartphones and maybe a few netbooks with the little green robot. It’s going to be a tough row to hoe though, as Acer is looking at some stiff competition.
We’ve already spoken about the superphones out there but the Android tablet space is going to get crowded, too. The Samsung Galaxy Tab looks like phenomenal device that could move a lot of units if it comes in at the right price and companies like ViewSonic and Toshiba will also have tablet offerings.
