Apple bullies Newsday into taking down the commercial for their iPad application

Last week Newsday uploaded a hilarious commercial to the internet that depicted a family eating breakfast with the father flipping through the Newsday application on his iPad only to slam it on the kitchen table in an attempt to kill a fly that has been buzzing around through the entire length of the advertisement. The punchline was that the iPad can do so many awesome things that a newspaper can’t, such as display videos and update you on breaking news, but there’s one thing the iPad can’t do compared to a newspaper and that’s being used to swat annoying insects. I loved it, you loved it, it went viral, but then Apple’s lawyers stepped in, and like everything the law touches, the world has become a less joyous place. They demanded that Newsday take down the ad or else all of their applications will be removed from the App Store.

What did Newsday do? Of course they pulled it, but man … why? Seriously, why? Anyone with an ounce of common sense isn’t going to watch that commercial and think to themselves “hmmm, the $500 object in my hands can be used to destroy the lives of insignificant creatures and I shall test this theory the next time I see a fruit fly”.

The death of humor is not something I thought I’d see from the man who was partly responsible for making Toy Story 3, which I saw last week, and which made me laugh, cry, and feel intense nostalgia over my own memories of leaving to go to University many moons ago. Why so stuck up, Mr. Jobs? No tits, no more farts, and now no depictions of the destruction of your devices? Ever see the Volkswagon commercial that has their latest models getting involved in accidents and the message is “our cars are safe, please buy them”?

Guess not.
