Marvell Announces 1.5 GHz Tri-Core Armada 628 Application Processor

Chip manufacturer Marvell has introduced a new tri-core processor, the Armada 628, clocking in at an impressive 1.5 GHz for the two main cores, and 624 MHz for the low power core. Not quite four cores, but still impressive given what it can do. The Armada 628 is a full System on a Chip, meaning it bundles together nine dedicated core functions a smartphone or tablet needs, including 3D graphics, advanced cryptography, and photo data processing. In terms of graphics in particular, the Armada 628 can handle full Flash, Open GL ES 2.0, DirectX, 1080p dual stream 3D video applications at 30 frames per second, 3D renderings of 200 million triangles per second, and can plays nice with USB 3.0 and HDMI outputs. Despite all of that high-end processing power, Marvell claims their chip eats up less battery life than dual core processors, and can handle 10 hours of 1080p HD video playback or 140 hours of music on a single charge.

Currently, Marvell is offering samples to customers, and since supported operating systems span the gamut of BlackBerry, Android, Linux, and Windows Mobile, we could start seeing this chip just about anywhere.
