A clever Russian hacker by the name of Cotulla has shoehorned Windows Phone 7 into the HTC HD2. We had seen others try to pull off the same thing back in the spring, but no stable ROM was ever made publicly available. Sure, it has an atrocious load time (on video below), but it does prove that Microsoft’s position to cut off all ties with Windows Mobile is more strategic than technical in nature. Do you have an HD2 and want to give this a try? Tough noogies. Cotulla tweets:
“Remember this is just DFT team tests, please never ask about release date and etc. Please don’t annoy with questions…Future will show all.”
With such a wide variety of hardware to be available for Windows Phone 7’s launch on October 11, backwards compatibility seems a little extraneous, especially if HTC will be releasing a new HD model specifically for the new platform, but at least this project is interesting from a technical perspective.
Take a look at some of our HD2 experiences, and just imagine how nice it would be if it ran Windows Phone 7…
