Remember those old Sierra adventure games? You know the ones I’m talking about, Kings Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and the like. If you used to dig these titles as much as I did, get ready to experience them on the iPad.
Sierra put out some of the leading games of their time, and I have to admit, the Kings Quest series was always one of my favorites. While these Sierra titles are available for online play at Sarien.net, webmaster and retro-gaming god Martin Kool has grander plans to bring these classics to the masses. Martin is busy working on his web game engine, adapting it to run these games on the Apple iPad. When done, all you’ll have to do is load a special URL into your Safari browser, and the game will play right there and then, on your iPad. You’ll even be able to setup icons on your homescreen for quick and easy access, just like a typical app picked up via the App Store. The cool catch? No jailbreaking will be required.
It remains to be seen if any legal action will be taken against Kool. No doubt the attention he’s garnered over the past little while will have a few eyeballs on his site, his game engine and indeed the games he has on offer for online play. In his defence, all games are run for free, and he’s making no ad revenue. This is truly a labor of love.
Hopefully if and when legal action comes down the pipe, the powers that be will plop down a big bag of cash for Martin and his efforts… or perhaps even hire the guy to work with their teams (that’d be cool!). A lot remains to be seen, but for me, all I can do is give a big *thumbs up* to Martin. He’s doing gods work.
