Yesterday Dell went live selling the Streak direct to consumers for $549.99, but for those looking for something a little more affordable in the short-term, Rogers is now selling it for $149.99 subsidized on a three-year contract. Sadly, it’s launching with Android 1.6, but it looks like an official 2.2 Froyo upgrade is coming soon, with plenty of unofficial solutions available in the interim.
The Dell Streak is something between a smartphone and a tablet, sitting in a grey area with a 5″ WVGA touchscreen. It has a 5 megapixel camera on the back with front-facing camera for video conferencing, Wi-Fi, 3G, GPS, 2 GB of on-board storage with 512 MB of RAM and a 1 GHz processor. It’s a neat phone, to say the least, and until the Venue Pro came along, headlined Dell’s foray into smartphones. In the long run, Dell may be leaning towards Windows phones, though the keyboardless Venue should still launch with Android.
Personally, I dig the Streak’s form factor as something that is more manageable to take calls on than something like the Galaxy Tab, while still offering more screen real estate than even the biggest smartphones out there today. There’s the argument that it’s too big to be pocketable, but I think I could manage without too much hassle.
If you dig it too, head over to Rogers to pick up a Dell Streak.
