Dell has scheduled a Feb. 8 event in San Francisco and this could lead to a new line of business-class smartphones and tablets.
The Dell invitation doesn’t reveal much, as it it titled, “Dell means business.” There’s also the somewhat boring line of “Please join us for an exclusive look at the next generation of business computing solutions designed to meet the evolving needs of IT and end users.”
While this could definitely be a new line of notebooks or IT products, the company has invited multiple members of the mobile tech press, like us. So, we’re looking forward to a lineup of business-class tablets and smartphones. It almost has to be, actually, as the future of casual and business computing is quickly moving to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets and we know that Dell is taking this market seriously.
We were very excited when we saw the Venue Pro with Windows Phone 7 because it was a well-designed piece of hardware with some slick hardware. Unfortunately, it looks like it has had problems getting these out in mass quantities.
I would imagine that Windows Phone 7 devices would play nicely with IT infrastructures, so maybe we’ll see a new smartphone with that platform at the event. Microsoft’s tablet strategy appears to be the next-generation Windows, so it’s too early to see that.
That leaves Android as the platform of choice for Dell and this makes a bit of sense considering it has multiple Android tablets under the Streak lineup. There are still some questions about how enterprise-ready Android is, but Dell could be doing some magic based on its corporate experience.
Whatever happens, it will be a busy few weeks here at IntoMobile. Sprint is holding an “industry first” event Feb. 7 and we may see glasses-free 3D handsets. This event will hit Feb. 8, then Palm will have its webOS tablet event the day after and then it’s Mobile World Congress the week after.
Get ready for an avalanche of mobile news, folks.
