A new social network launched today called Tout, which will let you share pithy 15-second video clips to your social network, be it on Facebook, Twitter, or on Tout itself. Videos can be shared through an iPhone app, The instantly reminds me of 12seconds, which went out of business a few months ago, and I have a hard time seeing how Tout will succeed when 12seconds didn’t. Still, I’m a big fan of the idea as an expansion of mobile social networking, especially if these videos can be eventually be geotagged.
Tout is aiming to cut through barriers like the 140-word limit imposed by Twitter, or the need for any particular writing skills. There’s something to be said for the impact of visual sharing, too; there have been a proliferation of Twitter image sharing services, but few have really harnessed video yet. Capture quality might have been an issue a few years ago, but 5 megapixel cameras and 720p recording isn’t uncommon in smartphones; that just leaves bandwidth as a potential barrier, but even that’s not a huge deal when video clips are so short.
Personally, I’ve never been big on the vlogging thing, but in short bite-sizes, maybe it’ll catch on. What do you guys think? Are you likely to share short video clips on a regular basis? Would Tout be the way to do it, or do you have another preferred method of sharing video? Head on over to Tout for a closer look, or get downloading at the link below.
