South Korea to make SMS free to fight inflation?

The Korea Communications Commission (KCC?) is considering making SMS free of charge to lower consumers’ mobile phone bills as part of the government’s plans to curb rising prices. Chairman of the country’s telecommunication regulator, Choi See Joong, said they are having “in-depth reviews” as we speak.

Following the news, shares of the two largest mobile operators — SK Telecom and KT — fell 1.9 and 1.3 percent, respectively.

The South Korean government has already pressed oil refiners to cut prices after inflation breached President Lee Myung Bak’s 3% target for the past seven months. According to the Bank of Korea, consumer prices may increase 3.9% in 2011, which is more than the previous estimate of 3.5%.

Lowering mobile phone bills as part of the plans to curb inflation. Sounds like every geek’s dream. What do you think?
