Untappd, a social network for beer-lovers, has just updated their web app so that you can find a specific brew in your neighbourhood based on where people have checked in to a specific brew. This is thanks in no small part to the Foursquare and Gowalla integration Untappd recently added, but unfortunately the new feature isn’t available on BlackBerry OS 5.
Untappd has become one of my favourite mobile social networks lately, and not (only) because I have an overt fondness for the alcohol. It’s got a crisp layout, lots of features (like adding friends, rating drinks, and leaving comments on check-ins), and a plethora of badge rewards depending on when and where you check-in. Best of all, it’s a web app, which at first I was dubious about, since going that route cuts out a lot of tight integration with notifications and the like, but it does allow them to roll out new features across multiple platforms at once with relative swiftness. I’d love to see other web apps that manage to emulate real apps this closely, but I’ve yet to find anything quite as convincing.
This new feature is a great way of crowdsourcing beer listings, but I worry that over time, they won’t stay accurate, and eventually the only way to keep things accurate and up-to-date. Of course, it would be tricky to offer bars incentives to put in that much legwork, but if they did, I could easily see venues with full beer listings becoming a part of Untappd.
If you’d like to give it a shot, head on over to m.untappd.com on your mobile browser.
