The founder of Taiwanese PC manufacturing firm Acer, Stan Shih, obviously isn’t too excited about certain Apple products saying that super portable notebooks like MacBook Air and tablets are “short-term phenomena.” He went forward urging notebook component suppliers to innovate and make more value-added products.
However, Acer obviously thinks differently, having announced 7 and 10-inch Iconia tablets. Likewise, the company’s upcoming super-thin Aspire TimelineX notebook wants to compete with the likes of the MacBook Air.
Shih did praise Apple for providing iPad users with an awesome outside-the-box experience. However, he also added his thoughts on consumers’ needs, noting they (us) want “products with low price and convenience.” Usually I agree with such statements except in this case Apple’s iPad (which is everything but the cheapest tablet option) outsells all other tablets combined.
Acer is a successful computer maker and I’ve no doubts they’ll also make money out of their smartphone business. That said, I’m not sure what Shih wanted to accomplish with his comments. Any ideas?
