Not too long ago we wrote about Gowalla going in a whole new direction, with its well-established check-in app to be dramatically changed for both iOS and Android smartphones. Well, that time has finally come, as the update has just rolled out to all handsets.
The new update goes beyond just the usual check-in process; instead it focuses more on travel and storytelling, as Gowalla users will now create “stories” when they meet up to hang out together. Discussing the new change in direction, the location-based company in its blog said:
We’ve learned a lot in the last few years. Almost two million of you have joined us for this journey. You’ve visited almost every place of note in the world with Gowalla. You’ve photographed it, highlighted it and shared it, many of you checking in with reckless abandon.
You’ve given us new eyes to see the world around us through, and today we want to share what we’ve seen with you. And if all goes to plan, we’re going to share it with millions more as well.
I just received the update on my phone, so I’ll be testing this bad boy out as the weekend approaches. It’ll be interesting to see how much new activity and buzz the app will generate. Did you get the update? If so, what is your thoughts on the totally revamped Gowalla app? Will it challenge the other social networking apps?
