Samsung is getting into the credit card business. The company announced the Samsung Galaxy Card ahead of its Unpacked event on July 22, and while it won’t generate the same excitement as a new foldable phone, it’s a practical offer for anyone who regularly buys Samsung products.
The timing is deliberate. Unpacked is one of Samsung’s biggest hardware events of the year, and launching a rewards card right before it gives buyers an immediate reason to put new devices on the card from day one.
The rewards structure is straightforward. Here’s what the card offers:
- 5% cash back on eligible purchases made directly with Samsung
- 3% cash back on purchases through Samsung Wallet
- 2% cash back on streaming service payments
- 1% cash back on everything else
- 20% discount on Samsung’s VIP Advantage loyalty and warranty program
- $200 cash reward if you spend $2,000 in the first 90 days
The 5% rate can add up quickly around Unpacked time. The base model Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, for example, costs $1,500, which would earn $75 back as a cash reward. That’s a decent return on a single purchase.
The $200 welcome bonus is also worth noting. Spending $2,000 within 90 days effectively bumps your return rate to around 10% on that initial spend. That said, carrying $1,800 in credit card debt to hit a bonus is never a great idea, so this only really makes sense if you were already planning to buy that much Samsung gear.
The card goes live on July 22, the same day as Unpacked. Consumers can apply online or at any Samsung retail store. The Unpacked event itself starts at 9AM ET and is expected to include multiple new device announcements, which means plenty of opportunities to put that 5% rate to use immediately.
Samsung isn’t breaking new ground here. Apple has had its own credit card for years, and Amazon runs several branded card products. What these cards all have in common is a reward structure that keeps you spending within one company’s ecosystem. The more you buy Samsung, the more you earn back on Samsung, which makes the next Samsung purchase feel slightly cheaper. It’s a simple loop, and it works.
For occasional Samsung buyers, the card is probably not worth the application. But for someone who upgrades their phone, tablet, or TV regularly and already shops through Samsung’s store, the 5% rate and warranty discount could offer real value over time.
